How to Communicate Professionally at a workplace

How to Communicate Professionally at a workplace

This Thursday Tip

We focus on how to maintain one of the most important personal skill that an individual can have, I mean most companies look for a trait like this in every interview, well this is the whole purpose of an interview. Today we touch base and I mean we have to come correct and advise you to learn and understand what everyone looks for in an employee

Understand that this is simply sharing information respectfully, directly and clear,

This is beyond talking and having a great listening skill, which goes hand on hand with emotional intelligence, so speak and listen actively.

Why This Tip Matters

Lack of Communication in a workplace leads to a lot of disagreements in difficult topics, dropping performance in the team, and if people are not on the same page for most of the time a conflict will be had, simple as that.

This matters because when communication becomes evident it becomes effective causing signs of performance in the company all from good communication.

For example:

  • Aim for clarity
  • Seek to solve the conflicts, rather than having them
  • Collaborate with others on projects
  • Be involved for problem solving tasks

5 Things You Can Do

1. Know where to communicate, and about what

Whether you are sending messages in the group chat or emails, you should be aware of what it is that you are saying and to who you are saying it to, This is half the job done, finding the right communication tool.

Ask a team member which tool the company uses most to communicate, below are just a few tools that are commonly used.

  • WhatsApp
  • Gmail
  • Zoom

2. Build collaboration skills

This is the backbone to an effective teamwork, that has honest communication amongst each other, Learn to work with others on everything, include people into projects that you know you can not get done all by yourself.

This builds trust and union ship with your team members, remember this doesn’t mean that you guys wont always be disagreeing but the chance of it happening when you work as a honest and open team makes it way better, working if a team is always the best when everyone is on the same page hey.

3. Talk Face 2 Face Often

Be active in talking more with your colleagues, get comfortable with being a little talkative with them, Open up the space where you address any issue face 2 face and can keep eye contact while talking. Although Communication over the phone can remove some strain, but constant work on your communication with real conversations in real-life uplifts your skills by far.

And Video conferencing fatigue is a real thing hey, trust me I was also shocked when I found this out, but consistent communication strengthens your communication but only when you have intent talk to people face 2 face.

4. Watch your body language and tone of voice

Communication isn’t just about what you say, it’s also about how you say it. Your body language may show how you are fatigued which might be completely unrelated to the conversation, Or your talking to someone about a serious matter and they are folding their arms and respond with a harsh tone, and related or not to what you were discussing with them, you’ll be touched or even irritated.

now this just shows how important the non-verbal actions can be, so when you are having a conversation with a team member, take account of these things and keep a relaxed posture with steady eye contact this helps your facial expressions and body language even more.

5. Stick to facts, not serious

What i mean by this is that part of being an effective team means we have to focus on the ‘now’ and facts are things that have actually happened, but a story is an interpretation of a situation not saying its not true but it doesn’t produce any productivity is we are in an environment like the workplace and having conversation about stories, keep it professional and keep moving.
